Andrea's "30" for my next 30

Ok, so most people that know me, know that I'm having a very difficult time turning 30 (in just a few days). And I can't pinpoint any particular reason why this is hitting me so hard. I mean really, I have a great life. I'm happily married, have 2 great kids, own a house, have a decent job, etc. etc. In fact I made a list back in college of all my goals that I'd like to accomplish in the next several years and I'm pretty sure that if I dug that list up again, most of them would have a check next to them. Perhaps it's because I've done so much in my life so far and I keep asking myself, "ok, so now what?" Or maybe it's just because 30 seemed so old back in the day. I suppose it's just the fear of the unknown.
On a completely different note however, I'm actually starting to get a little excited about getting older. Everybody keeps telling me "30 is the new 20", or "you'll love your 30s because that's when you start to truely know yourself". And I guess I'm starting to believe them. Afterall, I think I'm the most comfortable I've ever been in my own skin. I look at a people I know that are a few years younger and think "wow, I really didn't know jack-sh**". Plus, I'm only 30. This sense of clarity will only get better as time goes on.
So, with all of this tumbling through my mind the past couple months, I decided to do 2 things. First, I'm going to celebrate my birthday with a big party this Saturday night with friends and family (no kiddos). Second, being one of those "list people", I decided to make a list of 30 things I want to do, accomplish, whatever in my next 30 years (ok, so there are actually 31 things, but I couldn't leave 1 of them out). This was so fun to make and think about, and I tried to make these things about me, not the kids or my hubby which consume 99% of my life.
So, here 'tis in no particular order:

1. Raise healthy and happy kids
2. Coach a team
3. Teach a class of some sort
4. Become actively involved with a charitable organization
5. Buy a kiln and take up pottery again
6. Paint a picture and hang it up in the house!
7. Make a quilt
8. Lose 15 more lbs and maintain
9. Get a pool
10. Grow a garden
11. Get a tattoo
12. Get out of major debt
13. Buy a boat and/or jet skis
14. Continue to work for self, build high profit business while kids are young
15. Figure out what I want to be when I grow up/do something I genuinely love (job-wise)
16. Retire early
17. Swim with dolphins
18. Parasail
19. Go up in a hot air balloon
20. Learn to ski
21. Catch a fish at Pike’s Place Market
22. Girl’s trip to NY, go to a Broadway show
23. Mardi Gras in New Orleans
24. R&R on a warm beach and have drinks brought to me (Mexico, Hawaii)
25. Find true paradise in far off tropical place (Virgin Islands, Fiji, wherever)
26. Go on Honeymoon we didn’t go on/Romantic vacation with hubby
27. Vegas trip with friends
28. Disneyland with kids
29. Italy/European tour
30. Go on warm and cold (Alaska) cruise
31. Grow a backbone, learn that it’s ok to be confident

OFFICIAL Christmas Newsletter

Okay, so I'm such a slacker this year! Normally I send out a Christmas Newsletter along with my Christmas cards, but this year I dreaded printing out, folding and stuffing well over 75 pieces of paper. So, I decided to post my newsletter here this year (although I'd be curious how many people actually read my silly blog entries).

This year has been an amazing year for our little family of 4. Griffin is no longer a baby and has blossomed into a rambunctious, yet sweet toddler. He's a spitting image of Ryan, both physically and emotionally. He's stubborn and mischievous, yet a big cuddly teddy bear at heart. He's lost much of his baby fat, only gaining a few pounds this year, but is super tall for his age and solid. His hands and feet are officially bigger than Morgan's....a true James. His vocabulary has really bloomed over the past couple months. He literally went from saying only a few words, to full-blown toddler talk over night. It's certainly bitter-sweet watching my baby growing so quickly!

Morgan is also growing up way too fast. She thinks she is 3 going on 13, and is 100% pure sass. But oh, what a great kid! She's super smart, funny as heck, and so kind. This year was the big potty training year for all of us. We finally got the task done, and as a reward we enrolled Morgan in a dance class. She is loving every minute of it. Morgan is into anything girly, princess, or fairy, so it's very fitting for her.

Ryan continues to work at Les Schwab. I believe this is going on his 9th year there. Although it's a great job, it very wearing on his body. And, believe it or not, he's actually brainstorming possible opportunities that he may pursue in the next couple years. His ideal situation would be to be his own boss. The wheels are starting to turn, and we wish he could follow through sooner rather than later, but as we all know it's not the best economy to be trying to start your own business. :)

As for me, a big wish came true this past year. I'm finally working from home! I have my own online marketing biz, and do contract work for a great company out of CA. The situation couldn't be better. It allows me to spend more time with the kids, which has been my priority since Morgan was born. I also enjoy being able to work in my jammies. Needless to say, I probably won't be going back to a corporate office job ever again. I'm too spoiled.

We hope that everyone has a great Christmas and New Year, and please stay in touch! We love to hear from family and friends from afar.
Love always,
Andrea, Ryan, Morgan & Griffin James

WhoooHooo, She Did It!

Yesterday (Saturday 12/6), Morgan had her first dance recital, held at the Festival of Trees at the Medford Armory. She did so great! I was very nervous about the whole thing. The last 2 weeks of dance class Morgan was very shy and didn't want to participate. Her exact words were, "I don't want to do dance class anymore...it's too cold and boring". I'm really not sure where that came from, all though come to think about it, perhaps she was nervous about the recital b/c she didn't know exactly what it was. All she knew was that something big was going to happen (typical Morgan).
Anyway, before we went to the Armory, I made a deal with her. I told her I would buy her a strawberry smoothie with whip cream on top, and a set of markers (which she has been asking for lately b/c all we have here at the house are crayons and those are "for babies"). That got her a little excited. Then once we got there, we went up front toward the stage and she was completely enthralled with the other dancers. When it came time for her to perform, she didn't even seem to care that there were literally hundreds of people in the audience. She got up there like a trooper and did her routine. She even threw in a few moves of her own. You'll see in the video that as all the girl's were lining up on stage Morgan held her arms in a circle in front of her, just like a ballerina would do. Two seconds before the end of the performance, Morgan looked down and realized her ribbon came undone, so she ran off the stage to find me (typical Morgan). I quickly tucked it back in her leotard and told her to go back out there to take her bow. After the performance Morgan was disappointed because she wanted to go back out there and do more. I think she got the "bug". Watch out Taylor Swift!
She did so great, and I was so proud of her. Talk about cuteness. Here's the video and some pictures. In case you can't tell, the songs they sang were, "I'm a Little Teapot", "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star", and "Rudolph the Red Nose Raindeer":

Traditions

Yesterday was the start of a tradition that I plan on carrying out for a long time. We packed the kids in and drove into the mountains to find our own Christmas tree. Both kids loved being outside, as usual, and surprisingly so, it was warm up passed the fog line. I think the only thing we'll do different next go around is bring a chili or hot dog lunch to eat while we're up there. After naptime the kids and I decorated the tree. Well, Griffin mostly made a mess, but Morgan and I actually put the ornaments on the tree. She even got to put the star on.
What a great day!

The Girl's Got Talent

As a mother, I really can't talk enough about how great my kids are. It just comes natural. Call me biased, but I really do think that my Morgan is crazy smart and ultra talented. She's not even 3 1/2 yet and everyday she does something that makes me think "is she really only 3?"

First of all, I don't know exactly what age kids are supposed to be able to draw, so perhaps she really is "right on track". My only frame of reference is what I see other kids her age doing.

Anyway, the other night, Morgan was drawing on her Magna-Doodle. Lately she's been into drawing fish, and people with really large heads. But this time she came up with something different. Her exact words were, "Mommy look, I drew a Rhino for you!". Granted it's missing ears and two legs, but hey, a 3 year old drew it.

Here's her masterpiece, you be the judge:

HALLOWEEN

Had a blast on Halloween this year. The kids are getting big enough that they are truly enjoying it. Griffin was a pirate and Morgan was a mermaid. She initially started out to be Ariel from the Little Mermaid, but the red wig was "too itchy", so we ditched it early on.
This year, we made our typical rounds to visit Grandma Sharon at Bear Creek, and then over to Great Grandma Anne's house to show off their cuteness. At lunch time we went to a party at the Yeaman's house, which was great. The weather was just warm enough that the kids could play outside without jackets on. They engorged on cupcakes and other sugar snacks...great for the teeth! After nap time, we decided to go to Grandma and Grandpa Georgiana's house. We hung out there for a bit while Morgan and Griffin handed out candy to the trick or treaters, only getting scared a few times by the scary masks. Then we decided to attempt trick or treating ourselves for the first time. And actually the kids thought it was great when they discovered they get candy from all the houses with porch lights on. Too cute. The next few hours were spent watching Morgan cracked out on her 4 pieces of candy she had throughout the evening. Needless to say they slept like rocks that night. I uploaded some pics at the photo gallery: http://picasaweb.google.com/redneckfamily

The Pumpkin Patch

Had a VERY busy past couple days, ending with yesterday going the Pumpkin Patch with some friends. All of us had a blast! Both kids rode a pony, we went on a wagon ride, got Morgan's face painted, got lost in a corn maze, and of course, picked out the perfect pumpkins to carve. I posted some pictures in our photo album: http://picasaweb.google.com/redneckfamily

Also, I posted some pics of Morgan at her Dance class, which she is loving so much. Enjoy!

Another Cake

Had some fun this weekend making a friend a perverse Bachelorette Party cake. She sent me a picture of what she wanted, but I improvised a bit. Lotsa fun! The writing on the cakes says, "Welcome to the Ol' Balls-n-Chain".

NOTE: Rated R - Pictures are NOT orthodox and NOT appropriate for youngsters. :)

Updates

Been a few weeks since I last posted...here's some updates...
Morgan is officially potty-trained as of about 1 1/2 months ago!! Yay!! It's about time. For her "reward", we enrolled her in dance class, which my little princess couldn't be more excited about. The first class, as expected, she was shy, and wanted me to be out there with her. But by the second class rolled around she told me to "go in the other room with the rest of the mommies, Mommy!!".
Griffin is actually starting to talk, which is amazing. At his age Morgan was talking in full sentences, so it caught me off guard when all my 18-month said was "no", "mama" and "dada". and the always funny grunting noises. But he's really getting good now. If I had to count I would say he's up to about 30 words or so, and man is he good at the animal noises! Too cute.
Ryan is the typical Ryan. My Marine had his gear ready for hunting season 2 weeks ago and season doesn't start for another 2 weeks. Gotta love him, but man is he anal-retentive, and crazy organized!! ;) He start vacation next week, which is great. I get to see him around the house during the day, and he's always in a great mood when he's on vacation. Maybe I'll have him convinced to take the fam to a long over-due nice dinner.
As for me, I officially decided that I was sick of being fat and I no longer have an excuse to have a muffin-top, so I started up my "own" Weight Watchers plan. I love that diet! Before I got pregnant with Morgan I went to the meetings and followed it to the tee, and I lost 12 lbs. in 6 weeks. This time around I felt like I could save myself the money and do it on my own. So far so good! It's been 2 weeks and I've lost 4 lbs. I've been "elipticating" on my eliptal as well, which is fun. My goal is to lose a total of 20 lbs by the time I turn 30, and ultimately I would love to lose 30 lbs and be smokin hot. Baby steps!
I look forward to Fall, my favorite season. Can't wait to go to the Pumpkin Patch and carve pumpkins with BOTH kids this year (Griff is old enough now). Halloween is so much fun too.
That's about it for now! Toodle-doo Kangaroo!

Busy Weekend with Mamma

We just got back, well on Tuesday, from a great weekend in Denver. Chantry, the kids and I flew to Denver to see my mom last Friday. It's only a 2 1/2 hour flight so not too bad for the kids. Both Griffin and Morgan seem to be good little travelers. We hung out most of Friday and then met up with Karl (Opa) that night at Tequila's, a Mexican restaurant. The next day was pretty rainy and cold so we decided to hang out at the mall and do some shopping. It's always funny to see my mom shop for her grandkids, especially Morgan (after all girl clothes are way better than boys). She spoils them rotten and likes to buy them everything under the sun. On Sunday the weather was shaping up quite well so we took a trip to the Denver Zoo. The kiddos had a blast there. Both of them love animals, and truely enjoyed the train and carousel. For dinner we went to PF Chang's. Oh how I wish they had one of those in Medford. Delicious! Chantry and I are thinking of taking a special trip to Eugene just to eat there again (it's the nearest one). On Monday we had to make a must stop at the Coors Brewery to buy souvenoirs, and then chilled the rest of the day. Tuesday was also mellow. We went to Clive Cussler's car museum, which was awesome. Then flew home later that evening.
It was a great trip. Really good to see my mom, whom I miss dearly. Can't wait for her to retire and move back to Oregon. It was also good to be home. The kids and I all missed Ryan, believe it or not. And I'm fairly certain he missed all of us. Short trips like that are a necessity, I think. They make you re-align your thoughts about the people you spend the most time with, and really just get an appreciation for home and family.
Just posted an album of some pics. Check it out: http://picasaweb.google.com/redneckfamily

Fun with Fondant

I made a cake for my good friend Tawny's baby shower over the weekend. It was so much fun to make. I went to a different baby shower a few weeks ago, and they had a gorgeous cake, which inspired me to try making one myself. So here it is! The ironic part is Tawny's last name is "Wine", so the phrase at the top "Baby Wine" does NOT necessarily refer to the voluptuous objects below. Kinda funny though, eh? I think I could really get into this cake-making thing!

Side shot

Beautiful Tawny, due in just a few weeks!

Potty Training is the Pits!

Ok, so need to vent a little. Potty training sucks! This past weekend I ran into a high school friend with 3 kids. The 2 oldest were potty trained by 18 months, and her now 19 month old is doing great with potty training. Morgan, who just turned 3, has been "potty training" for almost a year and half now. She started to get interested a few months before she turned 2, and it's been a battle ever since. Two weeks on, two weeks off. And it's really hard to get excited now when she does show interest in the toilet. I must be jaded or something. The strange thing is that we never forced her into it, nor discouraged her in any way, but she has yet to get over this tiny hump. She knows when she has to go, she just doesn't. It's pretty much pure laziness. She also doesn't like to wear "pretty panties" whatsoever. The funny part is she'll go poop in the toilet no questions asked.
I've tried everything too...sticker charts, candy, special treats, tons and tons of praise, pull-ups, every type of underwear you can find....nothing does the trick. The past couple days, the Cool Alert pull-ups seem to work pretty well, but only if Morgan isn't distracted by playing or the TV or whatever.
Bottom line is, I think she's just not ready yet. And I really don't know where to go from here. Should I push it more, or should I just let her do her thing and let her potty train herself? Ugh! I don't know. I need professional intervention! Anyone know a Potty-Nanny 911?

Water Babies

We went to a BBQ at some friend's house today (thanks Nic & Jess). It was the first time in a long time that I crammed by muffin-top self into a bathing suit and got into the pool. I had a blast! I think I'm just getting to that age where I really could care less what other's think about me. After all I'm really not out to impress anyone. Granted, 20 lbs lighter and I'd probably one hot mama, but I'm working on that.
The best part about swimming today was Morgan actually wanted to get in the pool. After she did her typical groaning and whining she decided it was okay to put her feet in the water while sitting on the edge. Then after about 30 minutes of observation and watching the other kids have fun, she asked to get her "baving soot" on. So we did that, and then coaxed her into the water. Of course, no surprise, she hated it and wanted to get out right away. After I jumped in though and promised to not let go of her, she came in and hung on for dear life. I had to remind her of one of the Little Bill episodes (those of you with 3 year olds probably know what show on Noggin I'm referring to), where Little Bill was scared of the pool, but then kicked his feet and sang the "Guppy Guppy Guppy, I wanna swim like a Guppy" song. So we sang and kicked and splashed and had a great time. She even put her face in the water, although we still need to work on the whole holding breath part.
It's so funny how Morgan works with new experiences. She has to observe, then test the waters a little bit, then let everyone know how unhappy she is, then come back to the activity 20-30 minutes later and jumps right in. Yep, I think I've got her figured out!
Now we just need work more with Grifin, who absolutely wanted nothing to do with the pool today. I'm thinking about enrolling in swim classes for both kids soon!

We'll miss you Grandma Dee

This past weekend we spent in Bend for my Grandma Dee's memorial service. She passed away a few days before this last Mother's Day from cancer. Her wish was to have her ashes scattered in the Crooked River Gorge, over by her life-long best friend, Patsy's home. It was a great time, considering the circumstances. We were able to see the Duncan side of the family, of which I see only about every 3-4 years. We got to Pat's house right around 5pm and chit-chatted with family for a while, ate dinner, and then gathered to reminisce. We then drove over to the gorge to spread her ashes and through big slice of chocolate cake over the edge.

What an amazing woman my Grandma was. Of all the grandkids, my brothers and I were probably the closest to her. Growing up, I really can't recall a single Saturday where Rob and I didn't hang out with her while my parents worked. We would do all sorts of fun things with her...go out to eat, swim in her pool, go for walks, go shopping, etc. etc. I also remember going on a number of trips with her. One particular trip that especially stands out was our trip to Bend many many years ago. I specifically remember camping wth her and Patsy, and Patsy's grandkids. We also went to several museums, hikes, shopping in Sisters, so much more.

As I got older and when Grandma moved away to Joseph, obviously we weren't able to do as much cuz of the distance, but from time to time I would talk to her on the phone. What a positive woman she was. I don't think I ever heard any negative or pesimistic words ever come from her mouth, even through this last year filled with chemo, hair loss, and just plain not feeling well.
And really, if I think more about it, Grandma Dee was probably the greatest woman role model in life, next to my mom. From her I've learned to always have a sense of humor, even in the toughest situations. On the lighter side, from her I've learned:
To have an appreciation for my big butt and small boobs,
To paint with oils (oh what an artist she was),
To always sit up straight,
To swim,
To appreciate a good hamburger from Wendy's,
That it's vital for a woman should be strong, confident, and smart
And last but not least, to SHOP!

Oh what a beautiful, strong, independent, and classy lady she was. She was my favorite Grandma, and we'll all miss her deeply. God bless you Grandma Dee.

Works in progress

I've always thought it would be a great idea to have websites for each of the kids, and they could have them when they get bigger to do whatever with...so....I snagged a couple URLs and put some cute layouts on each. These are works in progress and hopefully will advance as time goes on (we'll see):
Morgan's Mind: www.morgansmind.com
Griffin's Garage: www.griffinsgarage.com

Let me know what you all think!

Happy Birthday Morgan!

Today is Morgan's 3rd Birthday. Can you believe it? I can't even comprehend the fact that 3 years ago I was in labor awaiting her arrival. And they say it only gets worse....hmph...bittersweet.
We had her official birthday party yesterday (Sun. 6/29) at the Doc Griffin Spray Park in Jacksonville. Except for the smoke lingering in the valley from the CA fires, it was a perfect day. Nice and hot! We chose to have her party at the J'ville waterpark because it's geared more toward smaller kids. At all the other waterparks around Medford and Ashland are a death sentence for any kids under the age of 6. Too many big and rude kids that have no problem mowing down the little kids. But the J'ville park is awesome...small and not too many people. Morgan wasn't much interested in going into the water at first (not a surprise). She just assume play on the nearby playground. But after we ate some lunch, opened gifts, and sang 'Happy Birthday', AND some coaxing from Dad (and Shelby), she actually tested the waters. She had a blast! Apparently the thing to do was to stick your tongue out and inch closer and closer to a fountain until it sprayed the kids right up the nose. LOL. The other "cool" thing was to play ring-around-the-rosie around one particular fountain.
We had a good turn out. Morgan's best friend Shelby came to the party, as well as Jake, Mason and Ella, John and Skyler, Gracie and Gage, and Makenna and Marissa. Of course I brought way too much food and slaved way too hard the day before over making the cupcakes that melted in the heat, but nobody except myself seemed to care. Morgan got lots of great girlie gifts - a Little Mermaid doll, a "laptop", a couple baby dolls with a stroller and bathtub, a few My Little Pony's, Dora doll, a princess crown, and a few other things that I can't remember. Needless to say, she's spoiled rotten, and she's loving every minute of it!
Here's a few pictures from the event. There's more uploaded to the photo albums, in case anyone is interested:

NKOTB - WTF?

I try to stay out of touch with the whole Hollywood gossipmedia thing....it's all garbage to me. But I've heard rumors and have read a few articles that NKOTB (New Kids on the Block) are coming back, and it definitely caught my attention. After doing some looking online, sure enough, they have an upcoming album release and tour. My first reaction....WTF??!!! This followed by a good session of laughter, especially when I saw their website, and of course the video. Gotta love the dancing at the end.
First of all, aren't these guys like 40 now? Second of all, what the heck happened to my first love, Jordan? He used to be sooooo much cuter!!! But then again, how 'bout that lil' Joey? Pretty dang hot if I don't say so myself.
This whole thing just brought back so many memories. I remember being completely obsessed with these guys. I knew every song and remember having every square inch of my bedroom walls covered in NKOTB posters. I thought I was on top of the world the time my mom took me and a few friends to their concert up in Portland. We had the worst seats in the world, but it was awesome.
They must be trying to capture that same audience again....good for them (I guess). If they can make fools out of themselves while making a few million bucks, I say go for it! Hang tough!

Happy Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all of the best father's in my life!
Ryan - I could not ask for a better husband and Dad for my precious babies. Even though you can come across to some as being quite tough and serious, you are pure mush when it comes our kids. You are patient, affectionate, and loving, and I'm so happy we are "partners in crime" to raise two beatiful kids.
Dad (Bob) - Though we live far apart, you are still a hug influence on my life. You were a great Dad from the beginning and continue to be a great friend. Because of you, I've got my intelligence, creativeness, and great looks (of course)!
Bill - Could I really ask for a better Father-in-Law? Not a chance. You've given us so many things, and I hope you never forget how much we respect, love, and appreciate you!
Karl - You've made my mom so happy and I'm so grateful that you're part of our lives, Opa!
I love you all!
-Andrea

First Family Blog!

Ok, so I finally decided to start adding more content to our family website (http://www.redneckfamily.com/). The first step was to try out this whole blogging thing. Being in the Internet Marketing world, you would've thought I would already have a blog, but my time is limited! So here it goes!
